Get to know me

Hi, I'm Eric

I was always enamored by photography as a child growing up, I have memories of being fascinated by how photography works when using my parents Kodak 110 camera and Kodak Disk camera. But it wasn’t until I was an adult that I really got into photography, first as a hobby, then as a wedding, portrait and event professional, then as an aspiring landscape and adventure photographer and now as a semi-professional in a variety of genres including landscapes, cities, macro, sports, portraits and more!

It was 1998 when I picked up my first SLR, a 35mm Fujica film SLR camera with a 50mm f1.9 lens, and I was obsessed with learning how it worked and seeing what I could create with it. This camera sparked a passion in me that combined my creative/artistic side with my technical/engineering side and I've been active in photography ever since.

I still have this 35mm Fujica and bring it out occasionally!

Fast forward to 2002 and I had bought my first DSLR, A 6.3 megapixel Canon 10D with a couple of kit lenses. I was photographing my son playing t-ball and this quickly evolved into photographing his teammates for their families and then soon photographing team photos for his team and then the entire league.

My professional photographer career started that summer and Hall's Photography was born! Yet, I didn’t really feel like a confident or accomplished photographer, I knew I had a lot to learn. I read books every night before bed to grow at a rapid pace, and I quickly grew into a professional photographer focusing on weddings, senior portraits, family portraits and events.

We built a studio off the back of our house and I just loved to play with studio flashes and create portrait art with the interplay of light, shadow, texture and color light by controlling, shaping and painting my subject with light. I loved working with clients to create artistic portraits that they appreciated from their special days in their lives. And then we moved across the country and I moved on from the portrait and wedding days…kinda…I still do some portraits today on a very limited availability schedule.

After we moved, I started getting more artistic in other genres such as landscapes, flowers, animals, cities and more, experimenting with new techniques, compositions, subjects. I got into hiking and outdoor adventures and of course brought my camera with me and created many adventure images that are in my galleries here.

Yet, the unique aspect of this era for me is I started to merge the skills and experiences from my diverse background of genres, which would end up becoming a core part of my style today. While many photographer mentors would suggest specializing in a genre, I know that will never be my style as an ADHD’er with an interest based mind. I can’t stay in one focused genre, it just wouldn’t be true to who I am, IYKYK!! This diversity is now a strength of mine as I combine all my experiences and photograph professionally in a variety of genres.

I regularly combine my lighting skills from the portrait world into my nature and forest images by taking flashes and continuous lights into the forest to light my subject as if it was my human subject. Take a look at my #FantasyShrooms art collection where I use anywhere from 1-6 lights, with various lighting modifiers and with multiple colors to create a surreal “portrait” of my mushroom subjects.

I often incorporate scenes along with natural objects and backgrounds as layers into my portraits to add depth and context to the story of the image, combining artistic composition with portrait lighting and posing.

Speaking of storytelling, with my sports photography, I’m definitely not just an action highlight photographer as I borrow from my wedding experience where I prefer to be imbedded as a team photographer with a team for a whole tournament to capture the story of the tournament for the players and families, much like I was imbedded with a bride and groom during their wedding day. I aim to capture action highlights of course, but I also capture candid portraits, emotional moments, behind the scenes sidelines images, even small details. I also don’t feel satisfied until I capture images for every player on the team I’m with and with a compositional artistry borrowed from my other genres.

In 2022, my life changed when I was diagnosed with stage 4, gleason 10 prostate cancer. I’ve now been thru 4 lines of treatment (as of 2026). I’m very open about my diagnosis as it is part of who I am these days, feel free to bring it up in conversation if you desire. I try to keep a positive outlook on living with stage 4 cancer and one of the core positives for me is how cancer has changed my perspective on life and how this has changed me as a photographer. You’ve probably heard people say “Cancer changes you” and I definitely live that change daily.

I see the world differently today, different things are more valuable to me now and these changes show up in my images too. I’m creating images that I would have never seen or thought about before. I don’t really have the full words to describe how it has changed me, yet the simplest version is that I simply observe the world differently now and those observations show up in my images now. I’m much more creative, I’m much more observant, especially on the little things that are often overlooked in people’s lives. I try compositions and angles I would have considered weird before. I’m not afraid to fail while trying for something extra special now, something about staring into the abyss of life that strips away the fear to fail.

Yet the most important change is that I photograph for myself now, for my own self-care.

Photography is my creative outlet, my zen, my art therapy, it is where I feel energized, yet peaceful.

I have a desire to create the best images in my life, mostly for my own internal validation that this is what I was meant to do. Yet, I love being able to connect with the community providing art to others using my unique skill set.

Today, I’m a professional photographer in a wide variety of genres, landscapes, nature, macro, sports, portraits, abstract, cities, the list goes on and on, just take a look at all the art I’ve created over the years in my Art Collections.

Today, I’m a photography mentor and instructor. I have been developing educational content and sharing that locally with select photographers who are growing in their own photography journeys.

Today I operate as Eric Hall Photography, reach out if you would like to discuss any aspect of my work further.
